INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, July 11. AFTER dropping the American record of Brendan Hansen during prelims, Eric Shanteau went even faster this evening in the men's 200 breast.
Shanteau, who survived a bout with testicular cancer during his Olympic run last summer, raced to a 2:08.01 tonight. That effort chopped nearly half-a-second from his national mark of 2:08.43 set during prelims. He also declared his intentions to make a charge at Kosuke Kitajima's world standard of 2:07.51. Shanteau's performance also moved him into second all time, ahead of Ryo Tateishi's 2:08.25.
"I came to this meet with high expectations," Shanteau said. "I think I met my goals. This was definitely a great way to go out, and is some icing on the cake. Since I was declared cancer free in December, things have calmed down a bit."
Auburn's Adam Klein completed a strong backhalf to capture the second spot on the World Championships roster with a time of 2:10.39. That effort smashed his personal best of 2:11.25 set during prelims. Meanwhile, Nashville's Curtis Lovelace touched third in 2:10.96 to shatter his lifetime best of 2:12.43 also set during prelims.
