Canadian Summer Open Nationals: Meet Takes Final Bow

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, July 20. THE Canadian Summer Open Nationals came to a close with one last set of morning finals.

Tanya Hunks began the final day of swimming at the meet with a victory in the women's 800 free. She touched in 8:39.89 with Lindsay Seemann, 15, taking second in 8:47.63 and Zsofi Balazs finishing third in 8:48.33.

Julia Wilkinson completed a stellar meet with a triumph in the women's 200 IM. After scaring Erica Morningstar's national record of 2:13.43 during prelims with a 2:13.64, Wilkinson won the title in 2:14.03. Stephanie Horner took second in 2:15.62, while Morningstar settled for third in 2:16.20.

Keith Beavers touched out Brian Johns, 2:01.10 to 2:01.28, in the men's 200 IM, while Tobias Oriwol finished third in 2:05.18.

Jen Beckberger earned the women's 50 free crown in 25.99, while Jennifer Carroll (26.22) and national-record holder Victoria Poon (26.24) completed the top three. The men's 50 free results were unavailable at press time.

Canadian-record holder Annamay Pierse made short work of the women's 200 breast with a time of 2:27.88, off her national standard of 2:24.65 but well ahead of Martha McCabe's second-place 2:29.07. Ashley McGregor, 15, snagged third in 2:32.82.

Mike Brown cruised in the men's 200 breast with a time of 2:12.98. Marco Monaco finished second in 2:16.21, while Mathieu Bois took third in 2:19.77.

Ryan Cochrane, who owns the national record with a 14:50.65, was in autopilot during his 15:32.09 victory in the men's 1500 free. Sean Penhale placed second in 15:42.47, while Daniel Jensen, 17, finished third in 16:04.79.

Pointe-Claire's Samantha Cheverton, McGregor, Caroline Kuczynski and Alyson Ackman won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:13.30, while the University of Calgary Swim Club's Dan Langlois, Brown, Adam Sioui and Joel Greenshields took the men's crown in 3:41.14
