South African National Championships: Jean Basson, Cameron van der Burgh, Melissa Corfe, Wendy Trott Shine During First Day
DURBAN, South Africa, April 1. ACCORDING to reports out of South Africa, Jean Basson, Cameron van der Burgh, Melissa Corfe and Wendy Trott have each notched their names on the country's 2008 Beijing Games roster at the South African National Championships.
In the women's 400 free, Corfe touched out Trott, 4:08.70 to 4:08.88, as both swimmers cleared the FINA A cut time and surpassed Corfe's previous South African record of 4:11.66.
In the men's 400 free, Basson clocked a time of 3:49.68, while beating Mark Randall's second-place 3:56.04. van der Burgh hit the wall in 1:01.25 in the 100 breaststroke semifinal round.
In other action, Lize-Mari Retief lowered the South African record in the women's 50 free with a time of 25.50 to dip under Lauren Roets' 25.64. Sebastien Rousseau also touched in 1:58.73 in the semis of the 200 fly.
