FINA/Ian Thorpe Doping Case Update
LAUSANNE, Switzerland, November 6. ACCORDING to an article in The Australian by Nicole Jeffery, FINA has elected to end the investigation into a potential positive doping test by Ian Thorpe first leaked by L'Equipe in bombshell timing with the FINA World Championships.
At the end of August, the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) cleared Thorpe of any wrong doing in the case, as reported here. However, FINA still had the opportunity to continue it case, which it dropped today.
Initial reporting on the investigation can be found here, as well as Thorpe's first public response to the claims.
This past summer, Thorpe provided medical evidence explaining why tests returned unusual levels of testosterone, epitestosterone and luteinizing hormones, as reported here.
An investigation into the original leak of supposedly confidential information by L'Equipe still has not taken place. Also, the timing of the release by L'Equipe and its reporter Damien Ressiot has caused some confusion within the swimming community, as reported here.
