Meet of the Week Preview: Ouachita Baptist at Henderson State
By Jason Marsteller
PHOENIX, Arizona, October 24. THE second SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week features a head-to-head tilt between crosstown rivals Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State. We already previewed the Indiana at Northwestern contest yesterday, and will take a look at the Carthage/Wabash match up tomorrow.
But, first, we shine the light on the Division II New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference battle between Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State:
Date and Time: Friday, October 26, 2007 at 7 p.m.
Location: Arkadelphia, Ark.
Facility: Duke Wells Center
Ouachita Baptist's Last Time Out:
Ouachita Baptist opened the season with victories over Delta State on Oct. 6 at Waggoner Pool as the TigerSharks defeated Delta State 190-103, while the women earned a 161-126 victory.
For the men, Nelson Silva took advantage of the season-opening meet as he made three automatic qualifying times for NCAAs. Silva, a sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil, tied the pool record in the 100 back and broke the pool and OBU records in the 200 fly. He finished in 50.48 in the 100 back, 1:51.99 in the 200 butterfly and 1:50.71 in the 200 back. He also made the provisional qualifying time in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.05.
On the women's side, Sarah Watson made the optional qualifying time in both the 100 and 200 back, while sister, Rachel, made the optional time in the 100 free.
Looking forward with Ouachita Baptist's head coach Jim Dann:
Because both schools are located in the same town, this meet is a natural rivalry. In any competition between the two schools, it gets to be pretty intense. Henderson always gets up to swim us. It does not matter what it looks like on paper, this will be a close and fast meet. Henderson has some new swimmers that will really help them. We are going to have to really swim well and reach way down if we are going to stand any chance at staying with them. I hope it doesn't go to the last relay. I am getting too old to be able to stand that kind of excitement.
Henderson State's Last Time Out:
Henderson State's men fell to Centenary, 165-95, while the women lost to Centenary, 67-55, but wound up with a win against New Orleans, 71-51 on Oct. 13.
The women's team walked away with titles in the 200 medley relay (Natalie Miller, Brittney Bryant, Allison Kliewer, Jill Johnson; 1:53.36), 100 breast (Alysa Syre; 1:09.42) and the 50 free (Alysa Syre; 25.74).
The men, on the other hand, won the 200 medley relay (Onat Tungac, David DeGues, Sarper Turker, Donald Smith; 1:38.63), 100 breast (David DeGues; 1:01.76), 100 free (Donald Smith; 48.25) and 200 breast (David DeGues; 2:14.03).
Looking forward with Henderson State head coach Coak Matthews:
"On paper, Ouachita is a much better team than we are at this point in the season. There are several events where we do not stack up very well against them. However, I have all the confidence in the world that my team will be ready to give them a great battle. I know that we have a good group of hard working young men and women who are up to the challenge and will be ready to swim tough and do the best they can to have a chance to win the meet. The Henderson/Ouachita rivalry is a very special one and when these two schools meet in any sport, you can forget past and recent performances because rest assured, both teams will be prepared! We are looking forward to the challenge and I thank the Lord Jesus for this and each opportunity to honor Him in our performances."
