English Lowers Own 100-Meter High School Backstroke Record

MORRISTOWN, New Jersey, February 5. COMPETING at the Morris County Championships, Montville High School's Lauren English set a national high school record in the 100-meter backstroke. Actually, English lowered her own standard in the event, as she touched the wall in 1:01.39. Her previous record was 1:02.17. Most high school competitions are held in yards, but records are also kept for metric races.

English, who figures to be a key player in the backstroke events at the 2008 Olympic Trials, also won the 50 freestyle with a strong showing of 26.35. She also powered Montville to a pair of relay triumphs, as the school prevailed in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. She split 29.26 on the backstroke leg of the medley and anchored the 200 free relay in 25.41.
