Chinese Keep Stranglehold on Gold at FINA Diving World Cup
CHANGSHU, China, July 20. THE Chinese kept their stranglehold on gold at the 15th-annual FINA Diving World Cup in Changshu, China on Thursday.
China’s Qin Kai rolled to the top finish in the men’s three-meter competition with a 538.50, while Russia’s Alexander Dobroskok picked up silver with a 475.65. The Russian nipped American Troy Dumais, as the U.S. diver pocketed bronze with a 475.15.
After falling to third place heading into the third round, Kai went on a tear with four consecutive dives of more than 90 points. His highest tally came in the fourth round with 96.25 points from a reverse 3.5 somersault from a tuck position.
Meanwhile, American Chris Colwill placed fourth with a 472.80, while China’s He Chong grabbed fifth with a 468.65. Japan’s Ken Terauchi rounded out the finals competitors with a sixth-place 468.15.
In the women’s 10-meter, Jia Tong held off countrywomen Lao Lishi for gold with a 385.30 tally, while Lishi checked in with a 379.85. Additionally, Canadian Emilie Heymans garnered bronze with a 376.35 total.
During the event, Tong and Lishi traded the lead through the initial three rounds before Tong connected on an armstand back double somersault with 1.5 twists for 81.60 points. Tong then cemented her victory with 86.70 points from a back 2.5 somersault with 1.5 twists.
Meanwhile, American Laura Wilkinson (the top qualifier through semifinals) finished fourth with 352.70 points, while Austrian Anja Richter pulled in fifth with 331.65. Canadian Marie-Eve Marleau closed out competition with a sixth-place 330.10 tally.
Next up, synchronized diving gets underway as the men take to the three-meter and the women’s remain on the tower on Friday.
